Your Yoga November 21

How are you feeling with the volatility of the season's change, shorter days, longer nights, cooler temps? Around here, we've started including more root veg or apples, chicken thighs instead of breasts, pumpkin custard and pie.  Healing Yoga practices can support you in building immunity and strength at this time of year, ahead of the holidays, the cold, the drying and the effects of reducing sunlight.

Healing Yoga for Early Winter

Practices for Enhanced Immunity

Exert more: your body will thank you.

  • Exert early in your day: before 10am is ideal.

  • Sun Salutations are easy to adapt and create warmth, flow, connection and strength.

  • Warming breath is your friend: think Kapalabhati, Bhastrika, Right Nostril (Sun Channel) Breath.

  • HIIT is a great addition to your practice.

  • Sleep a little more, but rise a little before the sun (about 7:15 right now).

  • Add warming spices, diverse grains in moderation, healthy fats and meat if it’s your jam.

  • Favor root veg, apples and seasonal treats (citrus in December!)

  • Start abhyanga (skin oiling daily, sesame is good for all body types) to get ahead of the drying winter

  • Create and follow a bed time ritual that gets you asleep by 10. We have screens off at 8pm.

Dhanteras: Nov 2

November 2nd is the day this year when Dhanvantri is celebrated in India, the avatar of healing. The mantra containing his name is sacred to healers and was given to me when I studied chanting with Thomas Ashley-Farrand, whose books are top notch on the subject of chanting and mantra. If you’re looking for more healing energy and focus in your life, the basic mantra is, “Om Shrim Dhanvantre Namaha.”

Dr. Lad will be holding a public puja or ceremony on The Ayurvedic Institute's youtube channel Tuesday at 11 if you're interested in attending live or recorded.

Diwali: Nov 4th

November 4th is Diwali in India, a Festival of Lights, celebration and the triumph of good over evil. I loved this time when we were in Silicon Valley as our neighborhood had many homes that celebrated Diwali and the lights, colors and aromas mingled with the Western celebration of Halloween in the most magical way. Diwali is celebrated on more than just the day, so if you'd like, consider your own rituals of honoring the light, good, generative elements that matter in your life. Some ideas are to wear colorful clothes, share sweets with friends and loved ones, burn remnants of ideas, activities or conditions you seek to leave behind, journal - and do yoga!

Early Winter: ~Nov 15

The Ayurvedic/Circadian season changes around November 15th: when the temperatures have solidly dropped, perhaps you've had a freeze and the characteristic warmth of summer in your area is behind. The sun has dropped enough that it's rays, even when bright and unimpeded, bring less warmth. The shorter days are noticeable, and you may even be sleeping more. Your body makes more melatonin, supporting more exertion (it's cardio-protective and helps in muscle building!), helping to keep us warm. Your digestion hopefully feels a little more robust and you may seek out slightly more unctuous (fatty, but healthy fat) food. Need help with digestion?
