Yoga is not about stretching. Yoga is about being strong + flexible.
Flexibility doesn't come from stretching: it does come from strength + a calm nervous system.
Your muscles have the ability to expand and contract, but your nervous system will restrict this range based your strength and holding patterns.
In yoga you work + lengthen your muscles simultaneously. Exercise physiologists refer to this as eccentric training. We just call it yoga. Combine this with breath coordinated movement and you have the most direct path to strength, flexibility, calm and balance.
Additionally, we begin each hour long class with some yin style poses to interact with the fascia surrounding the muscles targeting both nervous system and structure. We then move into a meditative vinyasa style practice to work with strength and flexibility and then come down for one or more restorative poses to receive the benefits of practice, calm the nervous system and get ready for the rest of life. Yin-yas-tative. Yinyastative. One hour, everything you need.
